Main St. Also assisting Towanda were Department 25 (North Towanda) and Department 7 (Monroeton). It was extinguished in about a half-hour and was contained to the dryer and the wall above the dryer, Bill Sheets, Towanda fire chief, said. Sheets said damage appeared to be minimal. He said the dryer, located in the back part of the building, would likely have to be replaced and work would have to be done on the wall. “It was a small amount of fire in the wall, mostly heavy smoke,” he said. Just Passing By: (No Pictures Available) December 8th 2007: At about 0200 Department 21 was dispatched to a reported Working Structure Fire in Asylum Township. Fire Chief Brett Keeney stated that John Blowers, owner of the residents, was sleeping on his living room couch when firefighters arrived at his burning home. Keeney stated he kicked in the door and got Blowers out of the house without injury. At the time, the fire was confined mostly to the exterior of the house, and had just started to burn the interior of the building, Keeney stated. Blowers’ house was heavily damaged in the blaze, Keeney stated. Blowers, who lived alone, had insurance on the house. . Keeney said he believes the fire at the Blowers residence started accidentally. The fire chief stated, he believes it started as a chimney fire. The chimney carries exhaust from a wood stove, he said. The fire “started near the chimney on the outside of the house,” Keeney stated. The fire at Blowers’ residence was reported by a neighbor or someone passing by, Keeney stated. |
